Ingredients

  • 2 cups leftover spaghetti sauce:This is your recipe's base; it gives it all the rich tomato taste. You can use any sauce you have left over like Bolognese, Arrabiata, or marinara.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil: Helps to sauté the onions and garlic adding depth and richness to the sauce.
  • 1 medium onion diced: Provides a savory base for the sauce, enhancing the overall flavor profile.
  • 3 cloves garlic minced: Fresh garlic gives the sauce a robust, aromatic flavor. Avoid using garlic powder for this step.
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional: Adds a bit of heat if you prefer your sauce spicy. Adjust the amount to your taste.
  • ½ cup vegetable or chicken broth optional: If the sauce is too thick after reheating, this broth will help thin it without losing flavor.
  • ¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese optional: Perfect for sprinkling on top of your sauce just before serving, adding a salty, savory finish.
  • Fresh basil or parsley: For garnish these fresh herbs add a burst of color and freshness to the final dish.
  • Salt and pepper: Essential for adjusting the flavor at the end to suit your taste.

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the diced onion and sauté for about 3 minutes, until it becomes translucent and soft.
  • Add the minced garlic to the pan and cook for another minute, stirring constantly to prevent the garlic from burning.
  • Pour in the leftover spaghetti sauce and stir to combine with the sautéed onions and garlic. Let it cook for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  • Add the red pepper flakes (if you’re using them), and season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste. Stir well.
  • Simmer the sauce on low heat for another 10 minutes. If the sauce becomes too thick, gradually add the vegetable or chicken broth, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach the desired consistency.
  • Taste and adjust: After simmering, taste the sauce again, and adjust seasoning if needed. Add a splash of olive oil or a knob of butter for extra richness, if desired.
  • Serve and garnish: Remove the sauce from heat and serve it over pasta, pizza, or use it as a dipping sauce. Don’t forget to garnish with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and chopped fresh basil or parsley for that final touch of flavor and presentation.
