This recipe for Balsamic Vinaigrette is great. Yes, you heard me right. Wonderful. That's not a word I use often. The meal I'm going to give you today really lives up to that description. You don't think I'd lie and say something was the "best," do you?Over the past few years, I've tried a lot of different balsamic dressing recipes. Some of them were good, but not quite what I was looking for.

Ingredients

  • Balsamic Vinegar 3 tablespoons:
  • The star ingredient that provides bold tangy, and slightly sweet flavors. For a milder taste, choose aged balsamic vinegar or try a balsamic reduction.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil 6 tablespoons:
  • Balances the tanginess of the vinegar and creates a silky texture. Use high-quality olive oil for the best results.
  • Dijon Mustard 1 teaspoon:
  • Acts as an emulsifier to bind the vinegar and oil while adding a subtle tangy flavor.
  • Honey 1 teaspoon:
  • It makes the vinegar less acidic by adding a little sugar. You can use maple syrup or agave juice instead.
  • Garlic 1 clove, minced:
  • Provides a bold savory depth. For a milder flavor, roast the garlic before adding it.
  • Salt and Pepper to taste:
  • Enhances the overall flavor and balances the acidity.
  • Optional Add-Ins:
  • A squeeze of lemon juice for brightness.
  • Fresh herbs like thyme or basil for an herbal twist.

Instructions

  • Whisk the base ingredients: In a small bowl, combine balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard, and honey. Use a whisk to blend until the mixture is smooth.
  • Add the olive oil: Slowly drizzle in the olive oil while whisking continuously to emulsify the dressing. This step ensures a creamy and cohesive texture.
  • Season to taste: Add minced garlic, salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Check the dressing for spice and make any necessary changes.
  • Customize the flavor: For a sweeter dressing, add more honey. For a zestier kick, mix in a squeeze of lemon juice or a pinch of chili flakes.
  • Store and serve: Transfer the vinaigrette to a clean jar with a lid and store it in the refrigerator for up to a week. Before you use it, give it a good shake, because the oil and vinegar may separate over time.

Notes

  • Choose quality ingredients: High-quality balsamic vinegar and olive oil are key to achieving the best flavor. Aged balsamic vinegar works especially well for a smoother taste.
  • Make it creamy: Add a spoonful of Greek yogurt for a creamy balsamic dressing that pairs wonderfully with roasted veggies or grain bowls.
  • Sweet or savory: Adjust the sweetness with honey or maple syrup, or add a pinch of garlic powder for a bolder flavor.
  • Storage tip: Keep the vinaigrette in a sealed jar in the fridge. To get the ingredients to mix again, shake the bottle well before each use.
  • Double the batch: This recipe stores well, so make extra to have on hand for salads, marinades, or even sandwiches.
